This week the children have been concentrating on adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator but also denominators of the same multiple – this proved tricky at first but they didn’t let it stop them! In writing the children have further developed their diary writing skills and I could not be prouder! We have also started reading our new class read ‘Cool’ by Michael Morpurgo.

Welcome back to Year 5! We have been developing our maths knowledge by learning how to solve the perimeter and area of rectilinear shapes – this proved difficult at first but they never gave up. Within writing we are now taking on the role of Stanley from of our class read (Holes) and learning to write a diary entry about our time on Camp Green Lake which the children loved!

This week we have finished their stories about the ‘Road’s End’ which I look forward to reading. In Maths we have been working on cubed and squared numbers and started to investigate rounding to check answers. Within our topic work we have been exploring how light travels and created some shadows to show our understanding.

Congratulations to Isla for becoming this week's Shining Star

They have also been investigating camera angles within our topic work.

Congratulations to Alfie this week's Shining Star!

In Year 5 this week we have been working extremely hard on dividing and multiplying numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. We have shown great resilience and have now mastered the skill – I could not be happier! In our writing we have been concentrating further on our character description but exploring the appearances and personality of the BFG. The children have come up with some amazing writing.

Well done to this week’s Shining Star – Megan!

15th September 2017

What a fab week we’ve had in Year 5! Not only have the children been persistently green in and around school, they have also produced some amazing work. In writing we have been writing a setting description using a range of techniques such as, similes, fronted adverbials and personification. We are developing our understanding of what is expected within our maths. We have been focusing on place value which involved working out the value of a digit and understanding the process of adding and subtracting powers of 10. They have also been researching the timeline of film which they are fully engaged in. We have all produced a poster with the important events that happened throughout time.

Congratulations to Seb on becoming this week's Shining Star, he has a clear understanding of the problem solving aspect within maths.

8th September 2017

In writing we have been writing a setting description using a range of features, the children have also been able to identify some of their features in their work. In maths we have been looking at place value of numbers to at least 1,000,000. Our topic this term is Entertainment and the children have been discussing and identifying what entertainment is and why, we have also started our new class read ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar.

Huge congratulations to our first Shining Star Jamie, for outstanding behaviour and attitude towards learning, keep this up!
