What are the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning?

vp12.jpgThe qualities and skills that help us manage life and learning effectively. There are five social and emotional aspects of learning :

  • Self-awareness – thinking about how well we know ourselves and can predict our behaviour.
  • Motivation – how working hard for things and achieving can make us feel good.
  • Empathy – being aware of other people and understanding how they might feel.
  • Social skills – being able to share, take turns and work together.
  • Managing feelings – being able to control ourselves, remain calm and solve problems peacefully.

Why is it important to develop these aspects of learning in the primary curriculum?

  • They are used in almost every aspect of our lives.
  • They help us to be effective learners.
  • They enable us to get on with other people.
  • They will help children to be responsible citizens.

What will the children do?

The children will study a theme each half term.

  • New Beginnings
  • Getting on and Falling Out
  • Going for Goals
  • Good to Be Me
  • Relationships
  • Changes

The role of parents and carers

Each theme covers a range of skills from the SEAL curriculum. Schools try to provide opportunities for children to practise, consolidate and extend their skills, and there is growing and considerable support for the view that schools should prioritise this. However, parents' and carers roles are also very important. There are lots of resources online which you can use to support the SEAL curriculum at home.
